Celebrations in Seychelles commemorating the 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi


Gandhi Jayanti Celebrations in Seychelles on 2nd & 3rd October 2019

On the 2nd October 2019, the High Commission of India in Seychelles organized the celebration of the 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi with the Garlanding Ceremony at the Gandhi statue located at the old Chancery premises at Le Chantier Mall, Mont Fleuri, Victoria. The ceremony started at 10:00 a.m. which was attended by senior Seychelles government dignitaries/officials, members of the diplomatic corps, Indian community and Seychellois friends of India.

The High Commissioner in his speech said that Gandhiji’s philosophy and ideals are all the more relevant in today’s world filled with strife adding further that we rededicate ourselves to work towards a free, dignified and unified human society, and reaffirm our resolve to live by the values and ideas espoused by Mahatma Gandhi.

This event was followed by the release of a postage stamp of Mahatma Gandhi jointly by the High Commission of India and the Seychelles Postal Department. Mr. Errol Dias, CEO, Seychelles Postal Department expressed his happiness that the relation between the two countries has always been warm and cordial and that Seychelles is greatly benefitted by areas of cooperation between the two countries in various fields.

On the occasion, the singing sensation of Seychelles, Ms. Sandra Esparon who had lent her voice to the favorite hymn of the Mahatma joined in paying tribute to Mahatma Gandhi by singing his favorite bhajan, “Vaishnav Jan To Tene Kahiye”. Ms. Sandra was presented with XPD Division’s publication “Vaishnav Jan To Tene Kahiye” for her remarkable singing of the bhajan. In spite of being a working day, the events organized were witnessed by over 150 people from all over Seychelles.

The day ended with the screening of the hugely popular Gandhi related movie “Lage Raho Munna Bhai” in the fully packed Yoga hall of the High Commission.

Commemorating the 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, who was a pioneer of Environment-friendly living and global sustainability, the High Commission had also commissioned Solar Rooftop Panels in 42 Social Housing Units in Seychelles on 3 October 2019 at Barbarons, Mahe.
