The High Commission of India in Victoria observed the 77th Republic Day of India on January 26, 2026, through ceremonies that underscored the profound diplomatic ties and the time-tested partnership between India and Seychelles.

Ceremonial Flag Hoisting

(Onboard ICGS Sankalp)

The morning celebrations commenced at Port Victoria at 0800 Hrs with a solemn flag hoisting ceremony held onboard the Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Sankalp. The National Flag was hoisted by the High Commissioner Shri Rohit Rathish and Commanding Officer of ICGS Sankalp DIG Vikas Walia. The ceremony was witnessed by members of the High Commission, crew of ICGS Sankalp, and a vibrant gathering of the Indian diaspora and friends of India.

A notable highlight of the morning was the cultural showcase presented by the sailors of ICGS Sankalp. The performances by the onboard personnel added a unique dimension to the festivities, celebrating both India’s maritime traditions and its cultural richness in the presence of the community.

Republic Day Reception

The celebrations culminated with a formal reception in the evening, which was graced by the President of the Republic of Seychelles, H.E. Dr. Patrick Herminie, as the Guest of Honour, and First Lady Mrs. Veronique Herminie. The event was further distinguished by the presence of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Diaspora, Mr. Barry Faure, Cabinet Ministers, senior Government Officials, members of the Diplomatic Corps, and prominent representatives of the Indian community.

The formal proceedings included:

  • The playing of the National Anthems of India and Seychelles.
  • The screening of a special four-minute documentary on 50 years of India-Seychelles bilateral relations, illustrating historical milestones and the contemporary depth of the partnership.
  • Remarks by the High Commissioner and the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Diaspora reaffirming the shared commitment to mutual growth and regional security.
  • A curated cultural program featuring performances by Indian and Seychellois artists, followed by a dinner reception.

The 77th Republic Day celebrations served as a significant occasion to reflect on the enduring friendship and shared democratic values that unite the Republic of India and the Republic of Seychelles.
