Mahatma Gandhi Statue unveiling ceremony on 11^th June, 2022

     The Statue of Mahatma Gandhi was unveiled at Peace Park, Victoria, on the morning of 11^th June 2022. It was in a short ceremony that the statue commemorating the life, achievements, and contributions of Mahatma Gandhi was unveiled by High Commissioner, General Dalbir Singh Suhag and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Tourism of the Republic of Seychelles, Mr. Sylvestre Radegonde.

   The event was also attended by former President Danny Faure, Designated Minister Jean-Francoise Ferrari, other cabinet Ministers, members of the diplomatic corps, distinguished guests, and friends of India.

   The Statue joined that of Sir James Macham, the founding President of Seychelles, and Nelson Mandela, South African anti-apartheid revolutionary and political leader who served as the first president of South Africa.

    The High Commissioner spoke of Gandhi’s achievements and noted that the statue was a meaningful tribute to a man who dedicated his life to serve humanity. High Commissioner was grateful to Seychelles for giving Mahatma Gandhi an eternal home in the beautiful country.

    Minister Radegonde highlighted Gandhi’s achievements and legacy that inspired world generations and said that the unveiling of the statue also further cemented the long historical links between the two countries. He commended significant contributions in the development of the country by Seychellois of Indian descent.

   The event also saw a rendition of Mahatma Gandhi’s favorite Hymn “Vaishnav Jan To” by famous Seychellois singer Sandra Esparon.
