Press Release – 75th Independence Day of India celebrations at HCI Victoria, Seychelles

 

A flag hoisting ceremony to mark the 75th Independence Day of India was held at the premises of the High Commission of India’s old chancery premises at Mont Fleuri, Victoria at 9.30 AM on 15th August 2021 in the presence of High Commission officials. The number of guests was strictly limited to enforce tenets of social distancing and the current guidelines of the Ministry of Health.

 

2.High Commissioner Gen. Dalbir Singh Suhag hoisted the national flag and delivered his address to the Indian diaspora in Seychelles which was broadcasted live on the social media accounts of High Commission of India.

 

3. A National Day Reception was also held at the Kempinski Seychelles Resort in the evening. H.E. Mr. Wavel Ramkalawan, President of the Republic of Seychelles, the First Lady Ms Linda Ramkalawan, H.E. Mr. Ahmed Afif, Vice President of the Republic of Seychelles, His Lordship Chief Justice Ronny Govinden, several Cabinet Ministers, government officials, members of the diplomatic missions and other high level dignitaries.

 

4. In his speech, the High Commissioner talked about India’s inspiring journey to freedom which was largely achieved through peaceful means and a cordial relationship with its colonizers. The High Commissioner spoke how India, a country so diverse in language, culture and religions came together to form a single Nation and inspired several other countries to fight for their own freedom. He spoke of the strides India has made in the fields of science and technology and education since Independence and how it has become not just self-sufficient but an exporter of goods and services to the world.

 

5. He also spoke about the strong relationship between India and Seychelles and the assistance India has been able to provide to its all-weather partner in times of COVID crises and the various projects that India has completed and are in progress in Seychelles.

 

6. HC concluded his speech by saying that India, under its vision SAGAR, was committed to security and growth for all its neighbours in the Indian Ocean Region.

Mr. Sylvestre Radegonde, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism congratulated India on its 75th Independence Day and recognized how the Indian freedom of struggle inspired a generation of African men and women in their own struggle of freedom. He also highlighted the strong ties shared by India and Seychelles going back to the first settlers of Seychelles, five of whom were Indians. Minister Radegonde also appreciated and acknowledged India's support and donations during the time of pandemic and also the various development works done by India some of which were inaugurated during the virtual summit between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Wavel Ramkalawan.

 

9. Cultural dance performances were held to showcase the diverse cultural threads of India’s fabric. A Bharatnatayam Dance performance from the southern India and a Kathak Dance performance from the North concluded the evening of celebration.

 

10. The evening Reception was also restricted in numbers and kept short due to COVID pandemic.

 

11. The Maison Esplanade building housing the High Commission of India was lit up in tri-colors on the eve of 75th Independence Day of India.
