General Dalbir Singh Suhag (Retd.)



High Commissioner General Dalbir Singh Suhag, PVSM, UYSM, AVSM, VSM (Retired) is an alumnus of Sainik School, Chittorgarh and joined National Defence Academy (NDA) in 1970. He was commissioned into the Indian Army in June 1974.

Gen. Suhag holds two Masters Degrees, one each in Management Studies from Osmania University and Strategic Studies from Chennai University and has attended various career courses in India and abroad which include 'Long Defence Management Course' at CDM, Secunderabad, NDC Course at New Delhi, Executive Course in USA and Senior Mission Leaders Course (UN) in Kenya.

In a distinguished military career, spanning over four decades, Gen. Suhag has tenanted critical command, staff and instructional appointments at tactical and operational levels that includes tenure as a Company Commander in "Operation PAWAN" in Sri Lanka, raising and commanding a Rashtriya Rifles Battalion in Nagaland and leading an Infantry Brigade deeply committed in intense Counter Insurgency Operations in the Kashmir Valley.

He also holds the distinction of commanding a Mountain Division in Jammu & Kashmir, deployed on the Line of Control in high altitude area. He has commanded a Corps, looking after the dual responsibility of Counter Insurgency Operations in the North Eastern States, as well as conventional operational tasks along the Indo-China Border and later served as the General Officer Commanding in Chief, Eastern Command.

Gen. Suhag was the Vice Chief of the Army Staff prior to taking over the appointment of 'the Chief of the Army Staff' of Indian Army on 31 July 2014. He retired on 31 December 2016 upon completion of his tenure.

Gen Suhag is highly decorated and is the proud recipient of the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Uttam Yudh Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal and Vishisht Seva Medal. He has also been awarded ‘Legion of Merit’ on 17 Aug 2018 by the Government of United States of America for his outstanding selfless contribution towards global peace keeping and nation building.

Gen. Suhag is also a distinguished sportsman and has excelled in athletics, basketball, football, horse-riding and polo.
